Red Elm and Blackened Steel Coffee Table
Made from a single slab of locally salvaged red elm, this coffee table features a unique design using a piece of steel to join two branches that diverged from what once was a single tree trunk cracked in two when the tree was still in its early life. The grain continuity on either side of the steel-filled crack provides evidence of the rift before the trunk disjoined into two independent branches of the tree. There is also a subtle contrast of two bowties made from locally salvaged Monterey Cypress that once grew in Pebble Beach, CA meant to stabilize a crack in the elm slab.
The base is a fabricated steel structure and red elm, joined to reveal only slivers of the steel base. The steel is blackened and clear coated and the wood is finished with a durable conversion varnish with a. dull rubbed apearance for a natural look, but an extremely protective coating.
